Meet Our 2017 -18 Board of Directors
John Ruby (Board Co-Chair)
As part of this dynamic whole, John brings his love and experience of natural systems design, a passion to connect and inform within community, and sense of garden adventure. He has been designing, installing, and harvesting edible landscapes since 2000, here and abroad. With the objective of achieving a harmonious balance of earth and people, he’s dedicated to the continuous evolution of our local food economy toward sustainability. His goal is to blend and apply his experiences as a world traveler, martial artist, permaculturalist, family and community member… while having enjoying life as much as possible.
Mario Galvao-Wilson (Board Treasurer)
Mario discovered us at Earth Day Every Day and at SummerSet Arts Festival in 2014, and has volunteered at numerous events for us. He joined our Board in 2016 and currently serves as the Board's Treasurer. While not a gardener per se, Mario is an active volunteer in the community and a world traveler. In addition to his interest in accounting, his technical expertise with computers, Facebook, and our projection system is invaluable.
Londa Jacques (Board Secretary / Admin & Education Teams)
Londa Jacques fell in love with gardening in her grandmothers’ gardens, but learned the art of vegetable gardening her Dad and from experienced plot mates at the University District P-Patch. In 1988 she moved to Shoreline and soon discovered that gardening in community was lots more fun than gardening alone in a big yard. Until the creation of Diggin’ Shoreline, community gardening in Shoreline remained an unfulfilled wish. During the interim, she served 8 years on the board of North King County Little League, 12 years on Shoreline Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services board, and 8 years on the board of Ballinger Neighborhood Association. In 2005, she rediscovered the joy of propagating from seed, and in 2011, sprouted the heirloom tomatoes for Diggin’ Shoreline’s first major fundraiser. Londa also currently serves as a chef for POPY’s Café,a free community meal program in Shoreline. An artist and retired marketing manager, she brings design / marketing presentation skills to the group.
Phoebe Schorer (Board Member, Social Media Team)
Phoebe joined Diggin's board in 2015. Diggin' first captured Phoebe's attention at a Shoreline's Earth Day
event where Diggin' was distributing free seedlings and encouraging others to try sustainable organic gardening practices. As a college student, Phoebe brings an invaluable youth perspective to our organization along with social media savvy and strong interpersonal skills.
Zeth Peterka (Board, Education Team)
Zeth, along with parents, Meghan and Brian, was a founding member of Diggin' at the age of 9. An active gardener and foodie in his own right, Zeth had to wait until he was "of age" to become an official board member. Today Zeth is one of three youth board members who share their energy, enthusiasm, youthful ideas, and social media expertise. In addition to serving on the board, he helps lead our annual tool sharpening event, works our info booths at major Shoreline events, and serves as our organization photographer.
Jan Stewart (Admin Team)
Jan Stewart has lived in a great neighborhood in Shoreline near Paramount Park Open Space since 1992. Serving on the Board of Paramount Park Neighborhood Group over many years, she helped restore wetlands, improved wildlife habitat, planted native plant species and removed invasives. Because of her interest in finding ways to strengthen our community, she was also a founding member of Shoreline Preservation Society and is currently served on the board of SWEL Time Bank. Since retiring from her work in accounting and management, there has been more time for gardening, something she’s done throughout her life, because she’s found that, “There is so much more gained from it than learning how to grow plants. But that too!"
